In my classes and in life, wear what you feel comfortable in…always! This is one of my mottos.

And here are some helpful hints when it come to hooping…

The hoop LOVES skin and the hoop will ‘stick’ better to areas of your body that aren’t covered in material. If you want to rock out in bra and booty shorts, go for it! Comfortable, cotton clothing that isn’t too baggy is best (slippery, synthetic material makes it more difficult).

I recommend shoes for beginners. When the hoop drops, shoes provide protection for your toes, especially if you have a heavier hoop.

Embodied Movement to me, is a movement practice that awakens and brings awareness to the body. It’s conscious, creative movement that takes you on a journey connecting you to yourself, others and life around you.

You only have one place to live – in your body. Embodied Movement inspires flow, freedom, brings pleasure and awakens your body, deeply connecting you to your sense of self and all that surrounds you. Inspired by my studies of Soul Motion, Nia and life, I guide you into bliss.

Hooping connects you to your body in new ways and opens up flow. For me, hooping is an embodied movement practice and that’s how I like to teach it to others. It provides excellent fitness for the body and a meditation-like state for the mind. Much like dance, hooping increases coordination, grace in movement, core strength, tones the muscles and improves cardiovascular fitness.  It keeps you engaged and is a refreshing change from your old fitness routine. It is perfect for overall mind/body health. Most importantly, it is fun!

General rule: the bigger and heavier the hoop, the easier it is to keep up on your body. Though I don’t recommend hoops that are more than 2 lbs…you have organs in there! Most students find that a 38 inch to 42 inch (95-105 cm) hoop works best to learn on-body movements, depending on their unique body size. Measuring the length from the ground up to your belly button is also a good way to determine what size hoop may suit you.

You’ll find there’s a ‘Fitness Weight’ and ‘Dance Weight’ hoop option on my US hoop supplier, LiviJoyHoops website. Fitness Weight hoops are slightly heavier and will be best for very beginners. Most students find they can work with the Dance Weight fairly well, however, it may be more challenging in the beginning.

Polypro hoops are excellent for off-body tricks and will make it easier on your hands and arms. These hoops are the ones many advanced hoopers dance with. They are much lighter and zippier!

This is the million dollar question! Honesty, you’ll probably end up with heaps of hoops if you find you enjoy it.

If you’re a beginner, please refer to the question above. Hoop size and weight comes down to preference. Keep in mind, the bigger the hoop, the slower your body has to move to keep it up, thus, making it easier.

The smaller the hoop, the more challenging it is to keep on-body, though smaller, lightweight hoops are great for off-body moves. With more and more practice, most hoopers begin to flow mostly with polypro hoops both on and off the body. However, you can still use a bigger, heavier hoop for off-body, it will simply be just that – bigger and heavier.

LiviJoyHoops has HDPE hoops, as well. This type of hoop is a great way to ‘bridge the gap’ if you are not quite a beginner, though not advanced yet.

To give you an idea of what my hoop journey has been on my 5’7” medium frame:

From my first hoop to present day:

42” Fitness Weight hoop

40” Dance Weight hoop

36” Polypro hoop

33 – 35” Polypro hoop

If you live outside of the US, I’d suggest doing a Google search or check out Facebook to find hoopers in your area.

If you’re local to Cairns, please contact me. I have a variety of hoops available for purchase ($35-$50).

You CAN hula hoop and I’m here to show you how. Practice, patience and perseverance, my friend. You didn’t come out of the womb walking so remember to approach hooping the same way!

I recommend trying to use the largest screen you have available, no worries if all you have is a phone to view the live classes on.

Plug in to an external speaker system for better audio. Bluetooth headphones or a bluetooth speaker work great for this.

In some classes we will ‘pin’ other participants’ videos. Here’s a link on how to do that.
